Where would you start? How would you sign these directions or directions to your home or workplace? What if you visited Gallaudet University and someone gave you directions around the campus. Would you understand them? Are you able to visualize what you are seeing signed?

Dr. Byron Bridges discusses tactics used in American Sign Language to give directions, which will assist in the development of your topography skills.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to describe how to use space and classifiers when providing directions in ASL.
  2. Participants will be able to identify and describe the use of perspective as it relates to ASL directions.
  3. Participants will be able to define topographical terms used and explain the application to ASL.
