This workshop is presented in ASL.
This workshop was developed to help interpreters gain insight and awareness to their participation in the process of diagnostic and therapeutic treatment. By providing clinical and client perspectives, case studies, analysis of the interpreting process, and interactive discussions, interpreters will be more comfortable in their role in mental health settings. This workshop will discuss commonly used mental health terminology used by most licensed mental health clinicians.
This workshop will focus on different roles among professionals especially the specialized role of staff interpreters in the mental health settings. Special ethical considerations for interpreting in a variety of mental health settings will also be discussed. Attendees should have prior experience interpreting in mental health setting and some knowledge of major mental health diagnoses.
- Participants will be able to describe the roles of various professionals within the mental health setting and describe how the interpreter fits into the setting.
- Participants will be able to identify specific ethical considerations that are unique to the mental health setting.
- Participants will be able to discuss ethical considerations within the mental health setting and apply ethical decision-making when presented a series of case studies.
