What makes some interpreters thrive while others burn out?

Is it passion? Perseverance? Personality? A strong connection to the Deaf community? Or could perfectionism be playing a bigger role than we realize?

Join us for an engaging and interactive workshop as we explore four fascinating factors that may shape an interpreter’s professional journey: Deaf-heart, grit, perfectionism, and personality. We’ll examine what the current research says, challenge some common assumptions, and invite you to reflect on your own experiences as an interpreter.

Whether you’re new to the profession or have decades of experience, you’ll leave with new insights into the characteristics that may influence resilience, career satisfaction, and long-term success in our field.

As part of this workshop, participants will also be invited to contribute to an exciting new research study exploring these topics. Participation in the research portion will be completely voluntary and will not affect your ability to participate in or enjoy the workshop.

Participants will complete validated measures including the Big Five Inventory (BFI), a perfectionism scale, and the Grit Scale in order to better understand how individual personality may influence stress, persistence, and susceptibility to burnout.

Come ready to think, laugh, reflect, and maybe even discover something new about yourself!

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to complete the Big Five Inventory, Perfectionism Scale, and Grit Scale, accurately calculate their scores, and identify at least two personality traits associated with an increased risk of burnout.
  2. Participants will be able to analyze their assessment results and identify one personal strength and one potential vulnerability related to perfectionism, grit, or burnout, as documented on a self-reflection worksheet.
  3. Participants will be able to develop one evidence-based, individualized strategy for reducing burnout risk while maintaining professional effectiveness and describe how they will implement it in their professional practice.
  4. Participants will be able to demonstrate increased awareness of the relationship between personality traits, perfectionism, stress, resilience, and burnout by indicating improvement on a post-workshop evaluation survey compared to their pre-workshop responses from at least 80% of the participants.
  5. Participants will be able to compare their grit and perfectionism assessment scores and write a brief reflection explaining at least one way persistence may serve as either a protective factor against burnout or a contributor to burnout.
