In this workshop, participants will be exposed to the basic techniques necessary for using International Sign (IS). First, participants will learn a brief history of IS. Secondly, they will discuss its linguistic status as a Pidgin system of communication. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of Deaf Interpreters in international settings. Then, for the bulk of the webinar, participants will spend time learning the basic vocabulary and the basic grammatical tools used in IS. Finally, they will see videos of Deaf IS users communicating about real-world events and issues.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will be able to explain the historical roots of International Sign.
- Participants will be able to identify the types of settings where International Sign is frequently used.
- Participants will be able to produce a variety of basic signs from International Sign.
- Participants will be able to analyze a variety of International Sign samples and determine meaning.
