In a general education classroom setting, Deaf and hard of hearing students encounter a variety of situations and obstacles that many do not realize or notice. In this workshop, I will discuss what educational interpreters should watch or notice while interpreting. Interpreters will learn how to develop relationships with their DHH students in order to have the best experience in the general education setting. DHH students should be the ones who have a voice in their setting, not anyone else. Let’s learn together and empower the DHH students to advocate for their education.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to describe the role an educational interpreter plays in advocacy and empowerment for DHH students in a K-12 setting.
  2. Participants will be able to identify various types of backchannel feedback that DHH students use in a k-12 setting.
  3. Participants will be able to analyze DHH students’ signing style and modify the interpreting product to meet  the linguistic needs of the student.
