This workshop explores interpreter professionalism on social media, a concept known as e-professionalism. A framework based in research and literature is introduced to enable participants to engage in constructive dialogue around professional social media use and become actively involved in consciously shaping evolving professional norms.
Core components of e-professionalism, such as the concept of small world ethics, are discussed with explicit applications to the field of sign language interpreting. We will also discuss the concepts of anonymous work and promotion via social media. Recent research findings into sign language interpreters’ perceptions of e-professionalism are introduced which illustrate theoretical applications, and participants will have the opportunity to discuss and feedback on these findings. Far from just focusing on the potential professional hazards of social media, an important emphasis is placed on ethically leveraging social media for professional benefit.
