Mathematical interpreting requires more than knowing signs for numbers, operations, and mathematical terminology. Interpreters must understand mathematical concepts, maintain accuracy, organize information spatially, and effectively communicate relationships and reasoning in ASL.
This webinar explores the linguistic, visual-spatial, and conceptual considerations involved in interpreting mathematics. Topics include mathematical vocabulary and notation, numbers and symbols, spatial mapping, graphs and geometry, algebra and variables, mathematical reasoning, common interpreting challenges, and strategies for preparation. The presentation emphasizes how interpreters can use the visual-spatial features of ASL while maintaining the accuracy and intent of mathematical discourse.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify linguistic and conceptual challenges that can arise when interpreting mathematical content between English and ASL.
- Participants will be able to describe how numbers, mathematical symbols, terminology, and notation can affect interpreting accuracy.
- Participants will be able to explain how spatial mapping and visual-spatial features of ASL can be used to represent mathematical relationships and concepts.
- Participants will be able to recognize common interpreting challenges involving numbers, variables, equations, graphs, geometry, and mathematical reasoning.
- Participants will be able to describe the importance of understanding mathematical concepts rather than relying solely on vocabulary or word-for-word interpretation.
- Participants will be able to identify preparation strategies that can support accurate and conceptually appropriate interpretation of mathematical content.
- Participants will be able to explain the interpreter’s role in preserving mathematical meaning, relationships, and reasoning without unnecessarily altering or correcting the speaker’s message.
