Name signs are often an after thought when interpreting a play. This workshop explores the richness that can be added to a theatrical interpretation by matching the name sign to the character. Exploring the history of name signs begins the building blocks needed to create a name sign that shows meaning and relationship to other characters. Participants will see when and how name signs are introduced, whether or not there even needs to be a fingerspelling of the name and how to incorporate a natural use of name signs into the story or performance.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify the two categories of name signs.
  2. Participants will be able to describe how name signs create relationships between characters.
  3. Participants will be able to analyze scripts to identify relationships in name signs.
  4. Participants will be able to explain how to create name signs to enhance character.
