Sign Language Interpreters will often ask “What’s your sign for…?” This is done, so the amount of fingerspelling can be lessened during the task of interpreting. But is this always the correct question for the interpreter? In everyday signing, fingerspelled words appear as frequently as 10% of the overall vocabulary. Are interpreters producing their best interpretation by not fingerspelling? Fingerspelling is used primarily in ASL to represent proper nouns, which could include, but is not limited to, specific terms, English words that do not have ASL lexical equivalents and technical terms. During this workshop educational and community interpreters will look at how fingerspelling is naturally used by Deaf consumers and what choices interpreters have in handling fingerspelled word into the interpretation. Areas to be addressed are how fingerspelled words are handled in ASL, and how and when a sign or classifier replaces a fingerspelled noun. Participants will look at lexicalized fingerspelling, nonce fingerspelling, replacing fingerspelled words with a classifier, initialized signs, flagged fingerspelling, abbreviations and name signs.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will be able to state when and why nouns are fingerspelled in ASL and list different ways fingerspelled words can be represented.
- Participants will be able to decide when to nonce a fingerspelled noun and when to abbreviate.
- Participants will be able to create classifier to represent fingerspelled nouns.
- Participants will be able to label or flag signs to represent fingerspelled nouns.
