Ethical decision making is difficult in any setting, but mental health interpreting presents additional issues which impact interpreting and can make ethics more complex as compared to other settings. Beyond the effects that mental illness has on language and clarity of message, it is also situational issues in which interpreters must make difficult decisions related to action, and sometimes, inaction. There may also be concerns regarding how HIPAA influences these decisions as well as the Code of Professional Conduct. All of these issues will be examined and sample scenarios will be discussed during this webinar to illustrate some of the complex aspects of ethics within the mental health setting.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify various issues regarding confidentiality in mental health interpreting and how the CPC and HIPAA apply to these issues.
  2. Participants will be able to explain the various roles in which a mental health interpreter is expected to perform and identify potential conflicts with these expectations.
  3. Participants will be able to describe strategies for establishing a conducive interpreting environment within the mental health setting.
