Most stakeholders agree that the expectations and roles of an educational interpreter are much different than those of a traditional interpreter. As a Related Service Provider, educational interpreters share responsibility for meeting the unique needs of each child, as determined by his or her IEP. With an increasing amount of deaf students being placed in public school settings, educational interpreters are finding themselves responsible for new and unique student needs. An increasingly common situation entails interpreting for students who are sign language delayed. In these situations, it can be difficult to find a balance between supporting language development and providing access to classroom content. Language development techniques, scaffolding, collaboration with professionals, and appropriately expressing concerns will be explored.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to describe the educational interpreter role and determine activities that fall within and outside of their prescribed function.
  2. Participants will be able to identify the key components of the various federal that impact the educational interpreter.
  3. Participants will be able to explain the language development of a Deaf child and how the educational interpreter impacts the process.
  4. Participants will be able to describe the difference between language acquisition and language development.
