According to Steinberg, “Deaf individuals report widespread fear and mistrust of mental health care professionals and service sites, as well as fear of misdiagnosis and wrongful hospitalization based on misunderstanding” (1998). Unfortunately, some clinicians may deem no need for an interpreter and be tempted to “make do” without one which unfortunately lead to communication barriers, trust issues and diagnostic errors. When service providers acknowledge the need to provide interpreting services, many Deaf clients continue to mistrust professionals including interpreters. These interpreters face challenges in conveying psychiatrist concepts to children/adults therefore this event reinforces service providers to have misconceptions about Deaf people. This workshop will focus on how to best advocate for clients by providing premier advocating and interpreting services through case studies, clinical and client perspectives at the same time apply ethical consideration in those settings.
- Participants will be able to identity and describe possible barriers to communication within the mental health setting.
- Participants will be able to identify possible ethical considerations and describe possible interpreter response when provided sample case studies.
- Participants will be able to explain how the hearing professional’s background and experience can affect the interpreter’s role within the mental health setting.
