This workshop will provide a brief history of oral transliterating, as well as an overview of the skills involved, including 1) the basics of speech production and accompanying terminology, 2) factors affecting speechreadability, 3) verbal techniques used in oral transliterating, and 4) non-verbal techniques used in oral transliterating. Structured activities will allow participants to practice the techniques presented and experience oral transliterating.

Educational Objectives:
  1. Participants will be able to define oral transliterating and identify the RID mechanism for credentialing qualified oral transliterators.
  2. Participants will be able to describe/model how to make a particular speech sound more visible.
  3. Participants will be able to describe/model how to use a verbal or non-verbal technique to clarify a visual message.
