We make many adaptations as interpreters. Many of those adaptations are linguistic: changing the word order and form of messages to meet the linguistic needs of our target audiences. Other changes are cultural: the information that we present is changed to fit the expected cultural framework of the person for whom we are interpreting. However, we also make many other changes to the message. We vary the amount of fingerspelling, the amount of contextualization, and the complexity of the message to meet the particular needs of the clients we are working with. In this workshop, we explore the ethical and professional challenges encountered when making this type of “customization.”
- Participants will be able to explore examples of linguistic adaptation, cultural mediation, and customization with presenter guided activities.
- Participants will be able to look at concrete examples of each, discussing the ethical implications of these choices.
