Culture is an integral part of the interpreting process.  In order to produce an appropriate and accurate interpretation, interpreters should examine the role and impact of culture on the process. The main reason we should study culture and understand it is because culture is embedded in language, you cannot separate the two.  It is essential that interpreters have an understanding of not only their own culture but also have an understanding of the consumers’ culture as well.  We often consider the effect that the consumer’s culture may have on the interpreted event, but we frequently forget or fail to consider the effects our own culture has on the interpreted effect.  Culture affects not only language and language usage, but also the expectations and reactions of the people interacting with the language.  In addition, interpreters will always be working between not only two languages but also at least two cultures. For these and other reasons, it is imperative that interpreters understand culture and its components.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to define culture and describe its components.
  2. Participants will be able to identify both the visible and invisible traits of a culture and categories examples.
  3. Participants will be able to explain how culture impacts interpretation.
