In this workshop, we explore extreme ethical situations, some real and some invented. While you may never encounter a bee buzzing around the courtroom or a client confessing his undying love for you during your interpretation, these extreme situations exemplify the ethical dilemmas that one can expect to encounter in the courtroom in more common, everyday legal situations. Some of these ethical challenges include being directed by the court to interpret verbatim, needing to explain cultural aspects of the Deaf community in order for the interpretation to be clear, and navigating interpersonal interactions with Deaf and Hearing clients.

Educational Objectives:
  1. Participants will be able to identify various interpreting ethical dilemmas, both overt and covert when presented sample scenarios.
  2. Participants will be able to list a variety of potential solutions to presented ethical conflicts and select the most appropriate one according to the Code of Professional Conduct.
  3. Participants will be able to develop responses to ethical conflicts and articulate them to legal personal.
