One of the unique aspects of ASL from other languages is non-manual markers: the adverbs, adjectives, and punctuation of ASL.  Depending on how this second language is acquired, using and recognizing non-manual markers may sometimes be miscued as affect.  Not only do these miscues impact the ASL-to-English interpretation, but they impact the vocal inflections and affect.  In our quest for equivalency, mastering these aspects of the language bring us that much closer.

This workshop will introduce participants to a re-awareness of the difference between non-manual markers (linguistic intent) and affect (emotional layering).  Participants will engage in practical exercises to improve the recognition of the difference with the intent to improve sign-to-voice production.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify specific non-manual markers through involvement in partnered hands-on tasks using videotaped native signers samples to identify NMM and affect.
  2. Participants will be able to describe a variety of affective facial expressions and the meanings of the facial expressions when presented with source material and hands-on tasks.
  3. Participants will be able to describe the process of discussing the work with peers through presentation of fundamental concepts by presenter and discussion with partners about findings in hands-on tasks.
