Interpreting in a healthcare environment can be very rewarding but also quite challenging.   Accurate communication is vital to improving a patient’s health status.  There are a number of laws that effect interpreters within the medical setting and special considerations that for interpreters working in this setting.  This article will bring us back to the basics of medical interpreting and explore the role and responsibility of the interpreter within this critical area of interpreting.

 Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to describe the different laws that impact interpreting service within the medical setting.
  2. Participants will be able to identify a number of specialized techniques that should be utilized by the interpreter in a medical setting and be able apply them in the appropriate situation.
  3. Participants will be able describe how the medical interpreter’s role differs than the role of interpreters in other settings.
