CEUs: 0.1 PS
Presenter: Andrea Smith
Presented in: Written English
Format: Instructional Article
When working in English to ASL interpreting situations, many interpreters struggle to produce an equivalent message in the target language. Beyond comprehension of the source message, interpreters must understand and be able to utilize the structures which are present in ASL that are either uncommon or absent from English. These structures are called Expansion Techniques, as identified by Shelley Lawrence, and are an integral part of ASL. By learning and incorporating these into their interpretation, interpreters will be more successful. This activity will explore Lawrence’s Seven Expansion Features and how to use them.
- Participants will be able to identify the seven expansion features of ASL when presented in a list.
- Participants will be able to distinguish features that are seen in English but are not frequently use from those that are not present in ASL.
- Participants will be able to recognize interpreting strategies that should be used for each of the Expansion Features, as identified by Shelley Lawrence.
