Presenter:Michelle Scott, Thérèse Mirande
Presented in: Spoken English
Format: Instructional Video
This is an Instructional Video by VoicesACADEMY. This was developed for both spoken and sign language interpreters.
This video is the first in a 3-part “Advanced Ethics” series. As training programs for medical
interpreters continue to gain momentum, codes of ethics are introduced as an expectation for
guiding daily practice. In this video, Therese Mirande, a certified medical interpreter and a
member of the committee that developed the NCIHC Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice,
digs deeper into the 5 qualities of an ethical interpreter (accuracy, confidentiality, impartiality,
respect and professionalism) and explores the 5 steps for ethical decision-making (identifying
the problem, identifying contextual factors, considering a course of action, implementing a
course of action and reflecting on the outcome). Viewers are encouraged to engage in
conversations about the concepts presented in the online forum on VoicesACADEMY.com.
