This presentation will focus on the roles played by hearing people with various levels of involvement in the Deaf community. We will explore the meaning behind the three terms: Deaf Heart, Allyship, and Allophilia, and the process a person may go through to acquire one of these labels.
Educational Objectives
- Participants will be able to define various terms related to oppression and describe the impact these terms have on the Deaf and Hearing Community.
- Participants will be able to explain the history of three terms (Deaf Heart, Allyship, and Allophilia) and analyze the contexts that lead to their use.
- Participants will be able to describe the roles these terms play within the Deaf Community and identify how they affect the relationship between the Deaf and hearing communities.
