This webinar introduces ASL interpreters to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). We will cover its history, how it applies the social model of disability (viewing disability as the interaction between impairments and societal barriers), and contrast this framework with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), highlighting key differences in approach and implications for interpreting practice.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will be able to summarize the key historical milestones leading to the adoption of the CRPD.
- Participants will be able to explain the social model of disability as reflected in the CRPD and identify how it differs from medical or charity approaches.
- Participants will be able to compare and contrast the CRPD’s human-rights framework with the ADA’s civil-rights framework and discuss practical implications for ASL interpreters.
