When it comes to the English language, Deaf students are often unsure how to comprehend or sign what they read. Educational interpreters also find it difficult to know when to sign using ASL grammar structure or to sign literal English word order. In this workshop, we will discuss various components of English such as puns, idioms, multiple meaning words, and more! Participants will learn when to use ASL grammar and when to maintain the English form and words while interpreting. Participants will have opportunities to practice these skills and to add resources, strategies, and tips to their interpreting toolboxes.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify when to use ASL grammar or English grammar while interpreting different components of English.
- Participants will be able to analyze English phrases and interpret for meaning rather than literal interpretations.
- Participants will be able to identify various strategies to employ when analyzing information in order to interpret effectively.
