In this workshop, participants will explore the function and meaning of various examples of jury instructions. First, participants will come to understand the role that the jury plays in a trial and the place of the jury instructions hold within the structure of that trial. In the second part of the workshop, participants will analyze paragraphs from various types of jury instructions and discuss the linguistic and cultural difficulties that they anticipate in the interpretations of these texts.

  1. Participants will be able to describe the function of jury instructions within a trial.
  2. Participants will be able to define the various terms that are typically used in jury instructions.
  3. Participants will be able to identify various linguistic and cultural issues that might impact the interpretation of the jury instructions.
