In this workshop, participants will consider the way that power is brokered in the courtroom. The participants will reflect how power differences are constructed and managed. The first half of the workshop will focus on how the interpreter negotiates these power dynamics for herself. The second half of the workshop will consider how the interpreter’s action affect the Deaf consumer in either oppressive or empowering ways. At the conclusion of the discussion, participants will consider scenarios in which power dynamics play a critical role and will consider how their decisions impact power dynamics for all parties.
- Participants will be able to define the terms power, oppression, and empowerment within the courtroom context and describe how they can effect an interpretation.
- Participants will be able to identify the various ways the interpreter presence and courtroom interactions can be either oppressive or empowering to the Deaf community.
- Participants will be able to analyze various interpreting situations in the courtroom that might be impacted by power.
