In the field of Sign Language interpreting, mentoring has been the traditional way to bring someone up in the field. But, mentoring is not a one style fits all. Based on the needs of the person there may be a several steps that may serve the purposes and needs of an individual. Along with mentoring there is also the step of coaching. Coaching, unlike mentoring, is the process of two or more people combining their strengths to assist one of them in attaining a huge elevation in performance.
The beginning of the workshop will focus on the value and steps of mentoring in our profession, and look at how to establish and define a Mentor/Mentee relationship. At the end of the workshop, the concept of Coaching for Higher Performance comes in as it applies to assist an interpreter to become ready for a specific event such as a performance test, a special interpreting assignment, or a one time performance, such as a play.
- Participants will be able to identify the reasons for mentoring.
- Participants will be able to differentiate between the different types of mentoring.
- Participants will be able to analyze how to guide, not teach.
- Participants will be able to compare and contrast the aspects of mentoring.
- Participants will be able to define aspects and benefits of coaching.
