CEUs: 0.1 PS
Presenter: Andrea Smith
Presented in: Written English
Format: Instructional Article
When working in ASL to English interpreting situations, many interpreters struggle to produce an equivalent message in the target language. Beyond comprehension of the source message, interpreters must understand and able to utilize the structures that are present in ASL that are either uncommon or absent from English. Voicing techniques for these structures are called compression techniques. By learning and incorporating these into their interpretation, the interpreter’s voice interpreting will be more successful and natural sounding. This activity will explore Shelley Lawrence’s Seven Expansion Features found in ASL and how to use compression techniques when presented them in discourse.
- Participants will identify Lawrence’s Seven Expansion Features of ASL when presented in a list.
- Participants will be able to distinguish features that are seen in English but are not frequently use from those that are not present in ASL.
- Participants will be able to recognize compression strategies that should be used for each of the Lawrence’s Expansion Features.
