When working in different interpreting situations, many interpreters struggle to produce an equivalent message in the target language. Beyond comprehension of the source message, interpreters must understand and be able to utilize the structures which are present in ASL that are either uncommon or absent from English and vice versa. These structures are called Expansion and Compression Techniques, as identified by Shelley Lawrence, and are an integral part of the interpreting process. By learning and incorporating these into interpretations, interpreters will be more successful. This workshop will explore Lawrence’s Seven Expansion and Compression Features and how to use them.

Educational Objectives:
  1. Participants will be able to compare and contrast the seven expansion and compression features.
  2. Participants will be able to recognize interpreting strategies that should be used for each of the Expansion and Compression Features, as identified by Shelley Lawrence.
  3. Participants will be able to distinguish features that are seen in English but are not frequently used in ASL and features frequently used in ASL but not in English.
