In this multimedia presentation, participants will learn language varies in the United States. They will explore the ways in which forms of language can be privileged and stigmatized. Participants will view videos, look at external links, and answer multiple-choice questions as they move through the presentation. At the end of the presentation, participants will take a review quiz to ensure that they remember what they have learned. Along the way, participants will check their comprehension by answering multiple-choice questions. They will review their overall understanding with a final quiz.
- Participants will be able to define terms related to linguistic diversity.
- Participants will be able to give examples of linguistic discrimination.
- Participants will be able to discuss how language forms become stigmatized.
- Participants will be able to define prescriptive and descriptive approaches to language variation.
