Advocacy is a hot topic in the field of interpreting. Often, sign language interpreters don’t always know when they should advocate for their Deaf and hard of hearing clients and when not to. In this workshop, we will discuss what advocacy looks like in the field of sign language interpreting. We will discuss the process for determining how and when to provide advocacy and when one should not overstep their role. By discussing potential scenarios that interpreters face, we will explore this difficult and sensitive topic to ensure the Deaf client maintains their autonomy.

Educational Objectives:
  1. Participants will be able to explain what advocacy in the Deaf community is and what it is not
  2. Participants will be able to analyze scenarios and identify when it is appropriate to advocate for their Deaf clients and when it is not.
  3. Participants will be able to describe potential harm that can occur when interpreters advocate for the Deaf community instead of allowing the Deaf client to be responsible for their own advocacy.
