This workshop will explore the three broad categories of Transliterating: Grammar and Vocabulary, Processing, and Mouth Movement patterns. The workshop looks at the history of transliterating, how RID defines the task of transliterating, how interpreting and transliterating are similar and different, and what features of English, what features of ASL make up the task of transliterating. how transliterators use space and how English grammar and vocabulary impacts the transliteration. The last part of the workshop will focus on how to set goals and improve your transliterating skills.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify and describe the users of transliteration.
- Participants will be able to explain the difference between interpreting and transliteration.
- Participants will be able to describe the mouth morphemes used by the interpreter with transliterating.
- Participants will be able to describe the non-manual signals used by the interpreter when transliterating.
- Explain the impacts of English grammar on the transliteration process.
