Before interpreters started working in VRS settings, the chance of interpreting a conversation that could be defined as informal or intimate was very low. Now, with calls to parents, children, siblings, boy and girlfriends, husbands and wives, the need to understand the dynamics of intimate and informal conversations is imperative. This workshop will look at how this type of conversation compares to other conversations and what the interpreter needs to know to make the outcome of these types of conversations successful.
- Participants will be able to compare the differences between informal/intimate register and consultative register.
- Participants will be able to identify components of conversations that are found in informal/intimate talk.
- Participants will be able to describe how ambiguity is used in informal/intimate talk and how to handle this aspect of the conversation.
- Participants will be able to identify unsuccessful conversations and determine when they do not reflect an unsuccessful interpretations.
