This course is only for those approved through the EIP Grant. Only those who have been approved for this course will be eligible to receive CEUs.

In this workshop, participants will look at how conversations naturally occur in ASL and in English.  Participants will become aware of non-verbal and non-manual markers that keep conversation moving and learn how to incorporate this into their interpretations.  An emphasis will be placed on how communication can break-down and cultural cues that the interpreter must use to assist individuals to have a successful and smooth  conversation.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to define how conversations naturally occur in English and ASL.
  2. Participants will be able to explain the technology of conversation and how language interactional tasks get done.
  3. Participants will be able to contrast how English and ASL users depend on non-verbal and non-manual markers to steer interaction.
  4. Participants will be able to demonstrate how interpreters make cultural adjustments to enhance the interpretation.
