In this workshop, participants will look at how conversations naturally occur in ASL and in English. Participants will become aware of non-verbal and non-manual markers that keep conversation moving and learn how to incorporate this into their interpretations. An emphasis will be placed on how communication can break-down and cultural cues that the interpreter must use to assist individuals to have a successful and smooth conversation.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will be able to define how conversations naturally occur in English and ASL.
- Participants will be able to explain the technology of conversation and how language interactional tasks get done.
- Participants will be able to contrast how English and ASL users depend on non-verbal and non-manual markers to steer interaction.
- Participants will be able to demonstrate how interpreters make cultural adjustments to enhance the interpretation.
