This 2-hour virtual workshop is for those seeking to become better allies and more qualified when working with DeafBlind individuals. This workshop will provide an overview of the diversity within the DeafBlind community, including a variety of communication methods and techniques used. The roles and responsibilities of interpreters when working with DeafBlind individuals will also be discussed. Participants will complete this workshop with a better understanding of how utilizing touch reconnects DeafBlind individuals to environmental information that may otherwise be missing.
Additionally, the basics of providing visual information to DeafBlind consumers through various techniques will be discussed. The end goal of the workshop is to assist in empowering DeafBlind individuals by communicating environmental cues through touch without interrupting communication.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will be able to list appropriate modes of communication to ensure cultural competency with DeafBlind individuals.
- Participants will be able to describe strategies that eliminate barriers frequently encountered by DeafBlind people.
- Participants will be able to list strategies that empower their consumers.
- Participants will be able to describe some of the communication techniques used with DeafBlind individuals for best outcomes.
