In any profession and even in daily life, individuals are presented with issues related to ethics. Many people have a vague idea about what ethics are and how they impact one’s life, but when actually asked to define ethics, many struggle. Taken a step further, using ethics when making decisions is something that is common, but understanding the full process of ethical decision-making can be quite complex. This article is meant as an introduction to the concept of ethics; what constitutes ethics and, perhaps more importantly, what ethics is not. Additionally, the process of making ethical decisions will be described and each step will be reviewed. While this overview and process can be applied to the interpreting field, it is also quite applicable to every facet of one’s life.
- Participants will be able to list and describe the 5 steps in the ethical decision-making process.
- Participants will be able to apply the 5 step ethical decision-making process when presented with an interpreting scenario.
- Participants will be able to identify what ethics are and what ethics are not when presented a list of possible definitions.
