As an interpreter working from ASL to English, have you ever been in a situation where you understood what the Deaf person was signing, but you just were not exactly sure how to express it in English? ASL will often group items together, make a point at the beginning of the story, use Classifiers to get the meaning across and use direct address which is different from how the English message would be delivered. English does not use these features but instead uses a label for a group of items, makes the point at the end of the story, uses adjectives to convey meaning and does not use direct address.

This workshop will first look at how a language uses idiomatic language to get a message across. Idiomatic language is the way words are put together most commonly in a culture and is understood by the target language user. Afterwards, participants will look at features found in ASL, such as rhetorical questions, direct address and expansion features, and discuss ways the interpreter can express this information in idiomatic English to best convey the information to an English speaking audience.
