The workplace is a complex and multi-layered environment, governed by implicit cultural norms and rules. In this highly specialized setting, signed language interpreters are expected to shift roles between confidant, co-worker, interpreter, assistant and advocate, whilst having very little guidance on how to balance and maintain their professional and personal boundaries. Effective practice in this setting requires the interpreter to commit to working collaboratively with both Deaf and hearing employees. Exploring the challenges and dilemmas the workplace setting can present, Dr. Dickinson will reaffirm the need for the interpreter to be an integral, visible and active part of the communication process.

Educational Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to describe various roles and tasks interpreters take on in workplace settings.
2. Participants will be able to explain the complexity of workplace talk/meeting talk that interpreters must navigate.
3. Participants will be able to define the concept of a Community of Practice and apply it to workplace talk during an interpreted interaction.
4. Participants will be able to identify the functions of small talk and humor within the workplace.
5. Participants will be able to identity how interpreting boundaries and roles may differ in a workplace setting, both within a single workplace, and as compared to other interpreting settings.
6. Participants will be able to analyze various strategies for negotiating, establishing, and/or maintaining professional boundaries that align with participants’ workplace goals.
