Working in healthcare settings is not an easy task. Some states allow novice level interpreters into doctors’ offices, hospital, and the operating room, which can create serious and lasting issues; Healthcare interpreting requires specific skills to positively contribute to the health literacy of Deaf patients. This workshop serves as an introduction to the specialty of healthcare interpreting, an overview of the ethics of the Demand-Control Schema, as well as sight translation techniques.
- Participants will be able to describe health literacy.
- Participants will be able to identify the domains and competencies of healthcare interpreting.
- Participants will be able to discuss sight translation practices and its importance in the healthcare interpreting.
