This workshop discusses the unique challenges of interpreting in a religious context. While interpreting a regular Catholic mass is uncommon for Non-Catholics, interpreting special masses and other ceremonies (such as baptisms, weddings, and funerals) is quite normal. Emphasis will be placed on understanding Catholic religious language (both spoken and signed) in the context of the Catholic theological tradition. Participants from other faith traditions may also benefit from this workshop as it will offer them a lens with which they can consider interpretation within their own tradition. Participants will view and practice frozen texts from common Catholic rituals.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will be able to define important terms and concepts within the Catholic church, specifically as they relate to weddings, funerals and baptisms when presented in a list.
- Participants will be able to interpret various frozen texts used in Catholic rites.
- Participants will be able to identify the various components associated with each Catholic rite; weddings, funerals, and baptisms.
