CEUs: 0.15 PS
Presenter: Dr. Jack Hoza
Presented in: ASL with an interpreted voice-over
Format: Instructional Video
This is an Instructional Video by GURIEC/NCIEC.
Jack Hoza will highlight findings from two studies he conducted that will be reported in his forthcoming book: Interpreting in the Zone: How the Conscious and Unconscious Function in Interpretation (Gallaudet University Press). An in-the-zone experience is a peak experience that happens when professionals are completely absorbed in their work and are performing at their best, where their skills and judgment rise to the challenges before them. He will review the two studies – an interview study, which involved filming and interviewing both novice and experienced interpreters (n=12), and a national survey of fully certified interpreters (n=223) – and he will explore how interpreters can have more in-the-zone experiences.
Educational Objectives
- Participants will be able to identify unconscious and conscious features that indicate a person/interpreter is not “in the zone.”
- Participants will be able to identify two “zones” that an interpreter may experience, other than being “in the zone.”
- Participants will be able to explain the differences between the three groups in Jack Hoza’s interview study, in terms of how they managed the interpreting process: Group A) novice interpreters (credentialed for less than five years at or below the state level), professional interpreters (randomly chosen nationally certified interpreters), and selected interpreters (nationally certified interpreters selected by a group of Deaf people).
- Participants will be able to identify and analyze ways in which they can get back into the zone when they find themselves on the edges of the zone or out of the zone.
- Participants will be able to identify the key characteristics of a community approach to mentoring interpreters, compared to a mainstream approach to mentoring interpreters.
