CEUs: 0.1 PS
Presenter: Andrea Smith
Presented in: Written English
Format: Instructional Article
Have you ever driven from your house to your workplace and not remembered how you got there? You drove there on “autopilot”, relying on experience and muscle memory to get you there. The same thing happens when we interpret. Any time we expertly do something, it becomes second nature and the intricate steps involved in the process start to blend together. It is important to revisit the interpreting process from time to time in order to further understand what we do as interpreters and how the individual steps build on each other. By dissecting the steps, an interpreter can pinpoint areas of weakness and work to improve their interpreting product. This article will discuss the process of interpreting through a variety of models developed for sign language interpreters.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will be able to describe the 7 stages of Cokely’s interpreting model when presented with a list of possible stages.
- Participants will be able to identify the purposes and uses of an interpreting model.
- Participants will be able to explain how to use an interpreting model to improve their interpreting.
