This workshop will address labeling, prejudice, and stigmas in Deaf Education. In the Deaf Education field, teachers and interpreters have both unintentionally and intentionally used labels for their Deaf and hard of hearing students as well as held prejudices and stigmas regarding these students. This behavior has caused great harm to the students and it has taken many years to repair this harm. Unfortunately, teachers and interpreters continue to use labels, support prejudice, and create stigmas towards specific groups of Deaf and hard of hearing students. We will discuss those behaviors and how they cause harm. We will discuss how to change those behaviors and understand why there is a need to eradicate them. We will also identify groups of Deaf and hard of hearing students are often targeted by these behaviors.

Educational Objectives:

  2. Participants will be describe the history of various stigmas that are commonly held within the field of Deaf Education towards Deaf/HOH students.
  3. Participants will be identify various behaviors displayed by interpreters in the field of Deaf Education and explain the process for changing these harmful behaviors.
