LGBTQQIA-what??? The list seems to get longer and longer. This workshop will focus on terminology and cultural nuances related to gender identity and expression—the T in the LGBT alphabet. This workshop is designed for interpreters seeking to increase their multicultural competence. As interpreters, we have the opportunity to work with such diverse groups of people and see the world through others’ points of view. How do we work to learn about those minority populations that are further oppressed within minority populations? For those individuals who may be Deaf, Deaf-Blind, hard of hearing or hearing, and LGBTQ+ or express their gender and sexuality different than the dominant culture, it behooves us as interpreters to work to be as culturally respectful, sensitive, and aware as we were when we were first learning about Deaf Culture. This workshop is designed to introduce and define terminology related to gender identity and expression and to examine our cultural values and biases that may impact our interpreting environment and interactions. We will discuss multiple perspectives on gender identity, and how interpreters can improve competency, sensitivity and knowledge when working with consumers who are gender-variant, genderqueer, gender nonconforming, or who have transitioned. We will also examine challenges to the cisnormative paradigm, and to illuminate the ‘T’ experience and discuss how we can further serve as allies with the consumers with whom we work. The mission of this workshop is to ensure that LGBTQQI interpreters and the hearing, hard of hearing, Deaf and Deaf-Blind consumers and interpreters we interact with are treated with respect, and that their lived experiences as a member of this cultural and sexual identity group are valued and taken into account to improve interpretations and communication.
