Interpreting in the mental health setting requires more than language facilitation. The interpreter must be able to recognize aspects of language that may influence a hearing provider’s perception and, perhaps diagnosis of the Deaf or hard of hearing patient. This workshop will dive into aspects of interpreting and the interpreter’s role while working in the mental health field. Ethical decision-making will be included as well as the slight evolution of the interpreter’s role in this unique and challenging setting.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will be able to customize and apply three scripts to use with practitioners in the field.
- Participants will be able to identify five characteristics of language dysfluency.
- Participants will be able to describe a minimum of three etiologies of deafness that may impact language.
