Interpreters are encouraged to match the affect of the speaker. Why then do so many interpreters stand on stage and appear to be little more than animated wooden dolls? There may be a number of reasons, not the least of which is the interpreter never having any performance training. So much of a good performance depends on aspects of the interpreter’s professionalism and not their interpreting skills. The scope of this article is limited to concert interpreting. Concert interpreting is a rarely mentioned topic that is becoming a more common work setting for interpreters and has its own challenges. The unique challenges presented during a live concert are rarely given more than passing treatment in IPPs or workshops as it is often seen as a natural extension of theatrical interpreting. Clearly, the very fact that you can preview and rehearse a play multiple times but you cannot do the same for a concert would indicate that the preparation process and live experience are going to be very different. This article is intended to help guide interpreters through the rocky waters of concert work to an equivalent experience for the new generation of deaf concert attendees.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to analyze the genre and lineup of songs at a concert in order to appropriately interpret as well as determine appropriate staffing for a given concert.
  2. Participants will be able to develop a system for finding song lyrics and produce equivalent target messages including all metaphoric and cultural information embedded in the songs.
  3. Participants will be able to describe the differences in grooming and dress for concert interpreting and traditional community interpreting.
  4. Participants will be able to discuss factors that impact the placement of interpreters within the concert setting.
