Voicing strikes fear in the hearts of many interpreters. This is especially ironic given that fact that English is the native language of the majority of interpreters and therefore should be the language they feel most comfortable with. There are a number of reasons that contribute to this phenomenon including fewer opportunities to practice the skill, lack of source language competence, and limited confidence to name a few. In this webinar, we will explore the factors involved in idiomatic voicing, techniques for incorporating compression strategies into your voicing, and English language factors that affect natural sounding voicing.

Educational Objectives:
  1. Participants will be able to identify and describe the 7 compression techniques used in receptive interpreting and apply them when presented with a sample text.
  2. Participants will be able to define and provide an example of the following English language conventions: formulaic elements, collocation, and idioms.
  3. Participants will be able to explain barriers to effective receptive interpreting and give specific strategies to reduce them.
