CEUs: 0.1 PS/PPO

Presenter: Jeremy Jack

Presented in: Spoken English

Format: Podcast

Over the last ten years, a trend has emerged related to new professionals graduating from ITT/ITP programs. Many have little to no confidence in interpreting. In addition, it takes a significant amount of time, sometimes years of practice, before they feel comfortable working in the field. This is particularly ironic given the amount of time spent in formal educational settings, training to become interpreters. The presenter will discuss the challenges faced by these new interpreters as well as possible resolutions for the identified issues as found in his informal research.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify the 4 questions the presenter asked during his informal research project.
  2. Participants will be able to define the concepts of reverse privilege, majority privilege, and ASL privilege.
  3. Participants will be able to identify and describe the three areas in which ASL privilege is observed in the interpreting profession.
  4. Participants will be able to explain Molly Wilson’s “Bypass” Theory as it relates to interpreting training.
