The mental health setting can be daunting for interpreters and requires specialized knowledge and skills. There are a number of language disorders and symptoms that can significantly affect the interpretation process. By understanding how mental illness can affect a Deaf patient’s language, an interpreter can be better prepared and confident in their interpretation. In addition, certain standard interpreting strategies and techniques may not be appropriate within the mental health setting.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify 4 language disorders and describe how they affect the interpreting process.
- Participants will be able to recognize 4 interpreting techniques that may be inappropriate to use in the mental health setting and identify why.
- Participants will be able to list 4 alternative interpreting techniques to use in the mental health setting.
- Participants will be able to distinguish the difference between a psychiatrist and psychologist and identify them from a list.
